Sitting on a rocky peninsula overlooking the sea, in the early spring sunshine I spotted a tiny purple crocus with its yellow thread like stamens. The petals grew in two sets of three, reminding me of two triangles overlapping, the upward pointing male and the downward pointing female; symbolising sexuality in balance. The petals were decorated with fine purple stripes as if they were the channels of life coming from the stem of the flower. I found myself breathing to a rhythm imagining the purpled veins carrying my breath from me out into the world, connecting to nature. The words, ‘we herald the way’ came to mind, as this fragile yet dynamic plant is often the first flower of spring emerging sometimes out of snow and frost covered ground.
